Xieng Dong was the name of this area, originated from 13th century AD before it was transformed to the capital of Lan Xang kingdom.
The town was situated on the famous Silk Route.Luang Prabang remained as the capital until 1560 before this title was given to Vien Tiane. During the first world war, Luang Prabang was a base for French army.
Nowadays, Luang Prabang is considered as a peaceful city with Buddhism signatures and stuffed with buildings, villas reflecting French colonial architecture
The Kuang Si or Kuang Xi waterfall is 29km southward of Luang Prabang city. It has 3 tiers and some pristine pool.
Pak Ou Cave is located by the mouth of Ou River. The cave is known for Buddha sculptures with hundreds of small, wooden Buddhist figures, representing to the wish of local. This attraction not only bring you the nature feeling but also the taste of a holy site.
On the elevation of 150m from the centre of Luang Prabang, Mount Phousi feature the best viewing point for the city and its vicinity.
